Late Friday evening I finished 'Atonement.' It didn't end at all the way I expected and seemed at points to be missing vital information- the information needed to answer vital questions. It was only in the end that it become known that that information was left out for a reason- Robbie and Cecilia didn't survive the war, and the little sister Briony was an author, writing their stories, and delving into fiction as she did so. I hate love stories that don't end happily, they make me feel like crying on behalf of the characters. But then, I think that it's that human element to a text which makes it all the more poignant. Either way, I'll certainly be seeing the film when it comes out, even if only to see how the text is translated from a novel, or a least, from the page, into a film version.
I started reading 'The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4' by Sue Townsend the same evening and finished it last night (Saturday). It was quite funny in places and made me laugh out loud and wish desperately to share it with someone else. This resulted in me reading sections out to my sisters- something which annoyed them muchly! Unless you know the full context of a novel or a situation, you don't really care, no matter how interesting you may find a book or a film when you eventually come to read it yourself. Anyway, I'm just speculating/musing now, so I'll finish this post off by saying that I've just started reading 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles.' Most likely that will also be finished this week.
