As the crow flies

I'm not superstitious as such, but I have a thing about crows- whether they just like rainy weather I'm not sure, but whenever I see one I know that it's almost certain to rain, or if I'm in a really bleak mood (usually brought about by grey skies and not enough vitamin D) then I take it that crows are predictors of death, which never really happens of course. Anyway, I had some news today which shocked me a little bit, and then this afternoon armed with Google earth maps to visit a friend at a place I'd never been to before, my tyre burst and I ended up on the side of a highway, in the rain, waiting for the RACV to come and rescue me. They came and were like angels, leaving me with a new found desire to drive about the countryside rescuing people in distress. Of course I know nothing about cars, so I have a fair way to go there.

Anyway, the purpose of this post is just to put up a list of books I've read lately. I need to choose two books I've read to put on a job application over the next month or so, and I'd like them to be books which accurately depict the kind of person I am. This means that chick lit and children's books may be considered (because of course I do read them), as long as there is some sort of intellectual text thrown in there as well. This text can't just be anything, it needs to be something that I'm comfortable with and will enjoy talking about if called upon to do so. So far the list consists of:

The Other Queen by Philippa Gregory
The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood
The Rouseabout by Rachael Treasure
A re-read of Seven Little Australians by Australia's own Ethel Turner and Love in a Cold Climate by Nancy Mitford.

But I'm working on finishing The Cattle King, a biography of Sidney Kidman which I bought at the general store in King's Canyon, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and a couple of plays by Shakespeare to add a bit of variety.

I particularly want to finish Frankenstein as it's one of the books on the 1001 books to read before you die list. Of the 1001 books I have so far read 30 which means that as a 20-year-old western female I have another ten books to get through this year to bring my yearly quota of books on the list up to 16 if I'm to read them all before I 'cark it' so to speak. But the thing is, there are so many more wonderful and exciting books out there than the ones on this list not to mention new books printed every day. My aim is to get through the books on the list, but not at the expense of enjoyment! Anyway, it's 2.08am and the only reason I'm up this late is because I sat up to watch the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Australia didn't come out until just before Zambia because of some complication with the Chinese alphabet and I felt that I should sit up to watch them. That said, I really didn't like their attire at all! I can understand that they're looking for a change from the green and gold perhaps, and the colours WERE pretty, but the style of the tracksuits wasn't flattering at all. Oh well, it's a once in a lifetime experience and the Chinese people should be proud that their ceremony was so well received.
Adieu for now :)
